Breitling has also developed a highly sophisticated line of multifunction quartz watches for aviation professionals. This new line includes the Aerospace, whose digital and analog display is designed to be user friendly and easy to read and the Emergency, which is outfitted with a distress signal micro-transmitter that broadcasts on the aircraft emergency frequency. For diving enthusiasts, the Super-ocean Heritage 46, a reissue of a model first launched in 1957, deserves mention. Water resistant to 656 feet, this automatic watch is not lacking in style and sells for $3,762 in steel.

Bentley automobiles. The resulting Breitling for Bentley line of watches attracts a prestigious, high-end clientele. Aside from its three automatic chronographs (including a model that measures elapsed time to one-eighth of a second, one featuring a large date display and a jump hour, the Flying B), the Breitling for Bentley line features a bold step into timepiece complications; the Breitling for Bentley Mulliner Tourbillon. The inspiration for this complication watch came from the workshop that personalizes Bentley cars in accordance with their owner’s every wish, with option ranging from $153,730 for rose gold, up to $315,000. As befits such a rarefied timepiece, the Bentley Mulliner Tourbillon’s caliber is truly exceptional; the tourbillon is designed by Renaud & Papi (Audemars Piguet). A Curiosity.

NOT YOUR TYPICAL BREITLING

You’ll never forget wearing the new Breitling Chronomat B01 after you clasp it on your wrist.

At just eight ounces on bracelet, it got true heft and a strong visual presence that infers strength in construction without being over the top enormous like so many watches these days. Still, this model is probably not the best choice for a smaller wrist.

The Chronomat has the honor of being the first watch to house the new Breitling B01 in-house chronograph movement. Having recently visited the Breitling facility in La Chaux de Fonds, I was duly impressed with the amazing investment the company has made in this new movement – including all new facilities, equipment and personnel.

The bracelet uses a double deployant clasp that required a short break-in period due to the tight tolerances. It may be a little tough to release the first few times. This eased with repeated removal and has since remained secure. Even though the watch has a healthy heft, the double clasp held tight and never released whether I was swimming, golfing or just banging around the yard with the kids. The five-link bracelet is supple and comfortable on the wrist and held together with screws rather than “cotter” type pins.

I personally like the screws better than pins for ease of adjusting – but just be sure to use a thread-locking glue to insure they will not work their way out through use.

In 1884, Leon Breitling opened his workshop in St. Imier in the Jura mountains and immediately began specializing in integrated chronographs. His business strategy was to focus consistently on instrument watches with a distinctive design. High quality standards and the rise of aviation completed the picture.

Today, Breitling’s relationship with air sports and commercial and military aviation is obvious in its brand identity. The watch company hosts a series of aviation days, owns an aerobatics team, and sponsors several aviation associations.

The unveiling of its own, modern chronograph watch at the 2009 Basel Watch Fair was a major milestone in the company’s history and also a return to its roots. Planning for the new movement began in 2004 and was kept tightly under wraps. The new design was to be “100 percent Breitling” and industrially produced in large numbers at a reasonable cost. Breitling’s headquarters in Grenchen and its subsidiary Breitling Chronometrie in La Chaux-de-Fonds both boast state-of-the-art equipment. Nevertheless, the contract for the new chronograph was awarded to a small team in Geneva.

By the spring of 2005, the initial design plans were on the table. By the end of that year, the first parts of the watch were ready, and just a few months later, prototypes were available for testing. In 2006, the brand-new Caliber BO1 made the COSC grade with flying colors and has enjoyed great popularity ever since. For the team of designers, the innovative centering system on the reset mechanism that requires no manual adjustment was one of the great achievements.
